Nigeria's new World Trade Center poised to send its economy sky high

The new WTC Abuja will open in the business district of Nigeria'a capital city early next year.
Nigeria's capital city of Abuja is about to get a new heart: a brand new World Trade Center complex.

The development is expected to open to the public early next year after the completion of the first phase of construction. It will join a network of 323 locations in 89 countries, started in 1970 with the inauguration of the first World Trade Center in New York City.
Funded by local and foreign financial institutions, as well as private investors, to the tune of 200 billion Nigerian Naira, or just over $1 billion, the WTC Abuja will be the largest mixed-use development in West Africa.

Well connected

WTC Abuja has been under development since 2010, on a lot spanning over six million square feet in the Central Business Area of the capital.
The location offers easy access to the city center and the airport, with a dual-carriage highway surrounding the site and a new light rail system currently under construction.
    World Trade Center Association Timeline

    • 1939: The World's Fair in Queens, NY, names its grounds "World Trade Center"
    • 1961: The NY Port Authority approves the WTC project
    • 1969: the non-profit, non-political organization is founded in New York
    • 1970: The first 15 members meet in Tokyo
    • 1973: The WTCA moves to the 77th floor of the WTC in New York
    • 2015: the network reaches 323 members in 89 countries and connects 750,000 companies and entrepreneurs
For business tenants, though, the most important connections will be those with the global network of 750,000 entrepreneurs that make up the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA).
"One of the missions of WTC Abuja is to improve trade relations between Nigeria and the rest of the world," Vinay Mahtani, CEO of the site's developer, Lagos-based Churchgate Group, told CNN.

"For example, it will enable international businesses to make investments in our community. Ties will be forged between government agencies, non-governmental organizations and international corporations, and the additional business that is captured within the walls of the World Trade Center will provide tax revenues to government which can be used to improve the welfare of the people."

Obama: Sorry, Gay 'Marriage' Trumps Freedom of Religion

President Barack Obama made clear where he stands on religious conscience rights: he believes the "right" to gay "marriage" is more important.

He told a Democratic National Committee LGBT fundraiser in New York City on Sunday that when there is a contest between these two competing "rights," he believed an individual's had to give way.

"We affirm that we cherish our religious freedom and are profoundly respectful of religious traditions," Obama said.

"But we also have to say clearly that our religious freedom doesn't grant us the freedom to deny our fellow Americans their constitutional rights. And that even as we are respectful and accommodating genuine concerns and interests of religious institutions, we need to reject politicians who are supporting new forms of discrimination as a way to scare up votes."

"That's not how we move America forward," he said.

His opponents, like Gov. Mike Huckabee, don't rightly respect the Constitution, he said.
Proponents of religious liberty say the Constitution contains no right to gay "marriage," but the First Amendment clearly protects the "freedom of religion."

All the time I just prayed for mercy; 20 years in jail for the murder of a living man

In 1982 Mpagi Edward Edmary, a Ugandan taxi driver, was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of his neighbour. But not only was Edward an innocent man, there hadn't even been a murder. Edward had been framed after a land dispute between families in the village got out of hand. Witnesses were bribed to say they had seen him kill the man and dispose of the body. He spent the next 20 years in Kampala's notorious Luzira prison and was only released when his family proved that the dead man had been hiding out in another part of the country. He told Matthew Bannister how his ordeal started.

According to Edwards narration of his ordeal, he said he was just arrested and told that he had robbed so-and-so. and later he heard he had not only robbed this fellow, but that he stabbed him as well and that the fellow was dead.

He was charged to court, and four eye witnesses testified that they had seen him when he committed the murder and disposed the body. After the trial was over, then he was sentenced to die. But at the time, a death sentence only meant life in prison, that was until the present government took over in 1989 that executions were actually being carried out. When i got there, he said, the place was so congested that i thought they would just take us straight to the gallows (because it was just close-by). I was certain I would die.

They finally found room for me, took my clothes and gave us two little blankets; one for the floor and one for covering.

Experiences such as were attainable in such places were very extremely and could even drive some people mad, especially knowing you were all for nothing, but according to Edward, he resorted to prayer an teaching to keep himself going until the time of his execution.

He constantly pleaded with God to show him mercy and save him - a prayer I'm sure he must have believed to be mere fulfillment of righteousness as he knew the certainty of the verdict. He also prayed that God will also show mercy to those who had wrongly accused him and forgive them for what they had done.

He lived in constant fear everyday that this verdict may be carried out. Most times they could hear the sounds of those being executed nearby and their screams of farewell right before they were killed. The prisoners had to make the hoods used to cover the head of those to be executed and to carry them to be buried after they had breathed their last. Putting it mildly, these were indescribably horrid times for the man, Mpagi.

Meanwhile back home, the 'murdered person' who had long moved to another part of teh country, sometimes returned home, but ony at night. When this was noticed, Edward's family wrote to the attorney general of the federation - severally, I can imagine - asking for the release of their loved one with the facts of the case, but as the case was a cold one, and with the Judge who had sentenced him, long dead, it took a long time to materialize.

Finally, he was released one fateful evening in 2000 after roughly 18 years in jail. The breeze couldn't have felt better. The skies couldn't couldn't have glowed brighter. The dead man walking, had finally been given back his life.

He said there were parties back home. His sons were all 'big boys'. Everything was different, but of course 'different' was okay to him. In deed, those hopeless prayers made near prison walls, were registering in the ears of an able One. He was hearing all along.

Why Robert Mugabe just shouted "We are not gays" in his UN speech

Robert Mugabe, the 91-year-old leader of Zimbabwe, deviated slightly from his prepared remarks, during his Monday evening address to the United Nations General Assembly, to do something that he does frequently: slur against homosexuality. "We are not gays," he shouted.
Mugabe made the comment in the course of a point about "double-standards," which is usually dictator code for "I'm tired of Western countries telling me what to do," and about "new rights."

Here's the full quote, with the line he added at the podium in bold:
Respecting and upholding human rights is the obligation of all states, and is enshrined in the United Nations charter. Nowhere does the charter abrogate the right to some to sit in judgment over others, in carrying out this universal obligation. In that regard, we reject the politicization of this important issue and the application of double standards to victimize those who dare think and act independently of the self-anointed prefects of our time.
We equally reject attempts to prescribe "new rights" that are contrary to our values, norms, traditions, and beliefs. We are not gays! Cooperation and respect for each other will advance the cause of human rights worldwide. Confrontation, vilification, and double-standards will not.

Mugabe barked the line, which drew audible laughter from the attendees at the United Nations General Assembly.

The Zimbabwean dictator has made intolerance of homosexuality official policy for years, and has frequently couched this in criticism of Western countries (which have sanctioned Mugabe for his human rights record), sometimes saying that Western leaders wish to impose not just acceptance of LGBT rights but homosexuality itself on Zimbabweans or Africans generally. Hence his declaration that "We are not gays."

"Then we have this American president, Obama, born of an African father, who is saying we will not give you aid if you don’t embrace homosexuality," Mugabe said in July 2013. "We ask, was he born out of homosexuality? We need continuity in our race, and that comes from the woman, and no to homosexuality. John and John, no; Maria and Maria, no."
As gay rights are generally getting accepted in much of the world, they're getting worse in a handful of countries in sub-Saharan Africa. A 2013 Amnesty International report detailed worsening and dangerous homosexual intolerance across much of the continent. This is not uniform to the continent, of course, and some countries such as South Africa have positive and improving acceptance for homosexuals.

Courts Refuse to Bow to Atheist Agenda Over God-Honoring Sign

Much like 'In God We Trust,' courts are upholding 'God bless the military ...' slogan.

Officials at Marine Corps Base, Hawaii, are examining whether a sign on base that reads, "God bless the military, their families and the civilians who work with them," will remain after receiving a letter demanding the sign's removal or relocation to an area near a chapel.

The letter, issued by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, inaccurately claims that the sign is a violation of the First Amendment's Establishment Clause even though courts have repeatedly found such slogans to be acceptable in similar contexts.

"Only someone with a great misunderstanding of the First Amendment or an ax to grind against religion would claim that such a slogan poses a threat or is in any way unconstitutional. The real threat is posed by those who want to whitewash any reference to God from public discourse—even ones as innocuous and uplifting as this one," said Chaplain (COL) Ron Crews, USA Retired, executive director of Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty.

"'God bless our military' is a slogan little different than the official national motto, 'In God we trust,' that appears so publicly on our money, and the courts have repeatedly upheld it. From the founding of our country, every president, including President Obama, has called on God to bless America. We hope that Col. Sean Killeen, the base commander, will stand firm and allow the sign to remain."

Masturbation Opens Spiritual Portals - Mack Major

People who cannot control the urge to masturbate or watch pornography are almost always plagued with a sexual devil. Maybe more than one.
In the world of the spirit and according to Jesus Christ: the sexual thought is the same as the sexual act (Matthew 5:28).
When we use the powerful force of imaging something as if it were real, we are actually attracting that which we image into physical being. When we imagine having sex with another via masturbation, we are actually summoning the power of the spirit realm to manifest the thing we are imagining.
We've all heard about the law of attraction by now, made popular from books and movies like The Secret. Well the law of attraction also works with sexual imaginings. There are such things as sex demons. And the danger in masturbating is that one could inadvertently summon a sex demon to attach itself to you through the act of masturbating. And once that demon attaches, it is difficult to get it to leave. It will drive you to masturbate, even when you don't want to. You'll be hit with urges to play with yourself so powerful that only an orgasm will allow you some temporary relief.
In worst case scenarios the one demon may gather other unclean spirits to itself to also attach to your life. That way it can wrap you tighter in its web of control, making it that much more difficult for you to get free. And many never do (Matthew 12:43-45).
By engaging in those acts of sexual impurity you are giving such evil spirits legal access into your life. And they will remain, causing untold personal pain, guilt and shame until the more powerful force of Jesus Christ is used against them to expel them from your life for good—See: Luke 8:29, Luke 9:39 and verse 42; Galatians 5:19-21; 2nd Corinthians 6:17-18 *****This was an excerpt taken from diva, goddess Queen: Breaking the power of soul ties, lust, and sexual demons. The Queen of Soul will perform for Pope Francis on Saturday [DETAILS HERE]

Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to Philadelphia will be a star-studded event, as a slew of entertainers are scheduled to perform for him during the Festival Of Families concert.
"Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin will be among the selected singers to perform during Saturday's international celebration, which is hosted by Mark Wahlberg and will feature other performances by Andrea Bocelli, The Fray, Sister Sledge, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and more.
For Franklin, the appearance will be the second time she's performing for a Pope. In 1987, she sang "How I Got Over" for Pope John Paul II during his visit to Detroit’s Silverdome.
“When I was called to sing, his motorcade was just coming into the arena, so I’m not sure if he heard my performance or not,” Franklin recalled during an interview with The Huffington Post.

The singer also expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to perform for Pope Francis. “It’s magnificent to be held at this level of esteem to be asked and be a part of history,” she said.
For Saturday’s performance, Franklin stated she will be accompanied by noted civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson, Bishop Paul Morton, MSNBC political analyst Michael Eric Dyson, and human rights activist Joe Madison.

The 73-year-old has chosen “Amazing Grace” and a “surprise” song to sing during the event -- but said her hit 1967 song “Respect” won't make the cut. Despite its absence, Franklin said the song’s lyrics are parallel to Pope Francis’ principles that all people should be treated with equal dignity.
“I think that’s already the message with Pope Francis. He has a high regard for people very, very sensitive to the indigent and the poor, and his message of change as well,” she said. “He put port-a-potties and showers in Saint Peter’s square -- he had them installed for the indigent and poor people there. So he has a great sensitivity to the people. He is the people’s Pope.”

Aside from prepping for her special performance, Franklin is also hard at work on negotiating a deal for her biopic. Through the years, the Motown legend has named her ideal candidates to star in the project -- including Halle Berry, Audra McDonald and Jennifer Hudson -- but now it appears she may have landed a writer for the film.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee recalled an encounter with Shonda Rhimes -- who expressed interest in helming the project --  during her August concert in Los Angeles.
“I’ve been negotiating the biopic -- we’re very, very close to signing there," she said. “Shonda Rhimes came to my concert, backstage. And Shonda is very interested in writing the bio for a telefilm. I think that could be a great, great move.”

World Health Organization removes Nigeria from polio-endemic list

World Health Organization removes Nigeria from polio-endemic listThe World Health Organization announced today that polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria. This is the first time that Nigeria has interrupted transmission of wild poliovirus, bringing the country and the African region closer than ever to being certified polio-free.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the public-private partnership leading the effort to eradicate polio, called this a ‘historic achievement’ in global health. Nigeria has not reported a case of wild poliovirus since 24 July 2014, and all laboratory data have confirmed a full 12 months have passed without any new cases.

“The removal of Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries is a major victory for Nigeria’s children, said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “It is a testament to the commitment and dedication of the Government of Nigeria, local leaders, and front line workers. And it is proof positive that if we work together in partnership to reach every community and immunize every child, we can finish the job of eradicating this evil disease everywhere, once and for all.”

As recently as 2012, Nigeria accounted for more than half of all polio cases worldwide. This success is the result of a concerted effort by all levels of government, civil society, religious leaders and tens of thousands of dedicated health workers. More than 200,000 volunteers across the country repeatedly immunized more than 45 million children under the age of five years, to ensure that no child would suffer from this paralysing disease. Innovative approaches, such as increased community involvement and the establishment of Emergency Operations Centres at the national and state level, have also been pivotal to Nigeria’s success.
The interruption of wild poliovirus transmission in Nigeria would have been impossible without the support and commitment of donors and development partners. Their continued support, along with continued domestic funding from Nigeria, will be essential to keep Nigeria and the entire region polio-free.
Polio, which can cause lifelong paralysis, has now been stopped nearly everywhere in the world following a 25-year concerted international effort. Polio remains endemic in only two countries – Pakistan and Afghanistan. The eradication of polio globally now depends primarily on stopping the disease in these countries. As long as polio exists anywhere, it’s a threat to children everywhere.

Nigeria has made remarkable progress against polio, but continued vigilance is needed to protect these gains and ensure that polio does not return. Immunization and surveillance activities must continue to rapidly detect a potential re-introduction or re-emergence of the virus. After three years have passed without a case of wild poliovirus on the continent, official ‘certification’ of polio eradication will be conducted at the regional level in Africa.
Eradicating polio will be one of the greatest achievements in human history, and have a positive impact on global health for generations to come. Nigeria has brought the world one major step closer to achieving this goal and it’s critical that we seize this opportunity to end polio for good and ensure future generations of children are free from this devastating disease.
    ###
Statements from other Global Polio Eradication Initiative leadership:

“The outstanding commitment and efforts that got Nigeria off the endemic list must continue, to keep Africa polio-free. We must now support the efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan so they soon join the polio-free world.” – Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General, World Health Organization
“We Nigerians are proud today. With local innovation and national persistence, we have beaten polio. We know our vigilance and efforts must continue in order to keep Nigeria polio-free.” –  Dr Ado Muhammad, Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Nigeria
“Stopping polio in Nigeria has been a clear example that political engagement, strong partnerships and community engagement are the engines that drive the momentum of public health programmes, enabling them to achieve great things. I would like to congratulate everyone, particularly political, religious and community leaders in Nigeria and across Africa, for reaching a year without cases of wild polio.” – Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa
“This is a clear example of success under very difficult circumstances. It shows we can eradicate polio if proven strategies are fully implemented. Combined with the news of the eradication of type 2 wild polio virus last week, we are moving decisively toward ending a disease that has paralyzed tens of millions of children. In this final mile, we must remain committed to providing the resources and the support to the front lines to make this worthy goal a reality.” – Dr Tom Frieden, Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Chairman of the Polio Oversight Board
“Rotary congratulates Nigeria on its tremendous accomplishment in stopping polio. On behalf of the entire Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we thank volunteers, health workers and parents in communities across Nigeria for their tireless commitment to ensuring every last child is protected against this devastating disease. In the months ahead, their dedication will remain as important as ever, as we work to keep Nigeria polio-free and to eliminate polio from its final strongholds in Pakistan and Afghanistan.” – K.R. Ravindran, President, Rotary International

“This is a significant milestone for the global polio eradication effort and the health workers, government and religious leaders and partners should be proud of this accomplishment. While the progress in Nigeria should be celebrated, it is also fragile. It is critical that Nigeria goes two more years without a case of polio which will require the support of partners, increased accountability at all levels of the program led by President Buhari, and increased domestic funding commitments.” – Chris Elias, President, Global Development, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
